There'll always be waste. It's a matter of needless waste that is frustrating.

That's a good point Sean. I have to say, things are getting somewhat better around here though when it comes to recycling, especially in the Metro Detroit. My city for instance has an awesome curb side pickup program that will take anything that is recyclable. They make it very convenient as well.

Still though, plenty of room to improve but at least that aspect is getting better. Mindsets need to improve more about conservation in general though.

Something more disturbing in my mind:

When I lived in Michigan, not one apartment complex (or any other residence for that manner) I lived in had a visible recycling center/bin. Also, as far as I know, the garbage companies do not provide recycling pickup. This forces people to take their recycling to the nearest center on their own time. With that type of visibility only a small minority will actually recycle.

When I moved out to Eugene, things were drastically different. My apartment complex manager made sure I knew where the recycling bins were upon giving me my tour. When I signed up for residential garbage service, I was provided with a trash can and a communal recycling bin (twice the size of the trash can).

Tell you what, I've been recycling so much more since I moved out here than ever before. The biggest reason is because everybody makes it convenient for you to do so. It's to the point where I can't throw away a Starbucks cup without feeling guilty...
