So I’m a homeowner!

The process of buying a house has been fairly long and involved, but despite a few snags here and there it was pretty smooth experience for my first time.  I didn’t post about it until now because I figured I should wait till I actually closed on the property before I said anything here.  Since I closed yesterday, I can talk about it now!

So about a month ago I found the right house.  The location wasn’t exactly where I was planning on being, but the price was right, the house itself was fantastic, and there were a lot of other benefits to the location that other places wouldn’t have (cost of living would be a bit cheaper, less traffic, good highway access).  I put an offer in on it which they accepted and all the gears started to turn.  I was a bit surprised just how many gears there were, but then again it’s not exactly a simple matter to buy a house.  That said it still went pretty smoothly.  The only real snag came when the appraisal came back and the house was a fair bit smaller than they originally said.  Once they measured it for themselves though and agreed that it was smaller we were able to negotiate a bit, and I got a bit of money off.  Not much, but enough where it took away any heartburn about getting a smaller house.

Yesterday was the festival of signing things.  I the sellers and I sat in a room at the title company and just signed documents for about 30 minutes straight.  There’s a lot of paperwork, and I’d be lying if I said I understood all of it; thankfully everyone I’ve been directly working with has been either a personal friend or a friend of the family, so I’m totally confident that everything is on the level.

So, now the house is mine.  I can’t take occupancy yet; that will come in 2-3 weeks.  But as soon as the keys are in my possession I’ll be sure to go over there with the camera and take some photos!  It hasn’t fully sunk in yet I think, but I’m still very excited.  It’s a little scary too, but mostly I’m excited.
