Just like the 503 days
Sunday I was lucky enough to go hang out with good buddy and former college roommate Paul. It’s been a shame that I haven’t seen him too much lately, considering he doesn’t really live that far away - I guess that goes to show how taxed I’ve been. Well after going golfing I made the trip up to Plymouth to hang out like old times; like the 503 cave. Like any good adventure involving Paul and myself there was some games, some wackiness, and a quest. Seeing as we are both getting more into music I also took up some of my gear so we could have a sort of jam session too.
We started with the quest. Over dinner I was discussing how I tried out the Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix demo for Xbox 360 and how hilarious it was (and surprisingly, somewhat entertaining). Then I remembered that Paul had a Wii, and the Wii version of the game was supposed to be the best because of the wand control. This is exactly the sort of mindless thing that can be really entertaining so we both sort of came to the conclusion that we should track down a copy at a rental place and give it a shot.
So we head out and drive across town to Blockbuster. Of course, they didn’t have it yet. So not willing to give up we hopped in the car again and went a bit further, to Family Video. Of course, the single copy they had was checked out, though it was supposed to be returned that night before midnight. We considered waiting there for whoever to bring it back, then decided against it, defeated.
But it wasn’t that big of a deal. We went back to play Cooking Mama: Cook Off which was pretty entertaining. Basically a collection of mini-games that you can play head-to-head while you try to make all kinds of various food items. It got a bit frantic at times, though not as much as WarioWare: Smooth Moves. One of the most entertaining things about Cooking Mama had to be the little animated character who would praise or criticize you based on your performance. Some of her remarks were pretty bizarre…
Paul showed me his Game Boy Camera toy which actually had a little music making app built in to it. The most interesting thing to me was it had a few different actual step sequencers in it, taking a page from Roland’s book. While you didn’t have quite as much control over it as say a TB-303 you could still produce some pretty cool sounds, especially considering it was on a Game Boy. You could even set portamento and a few envelopes for the faux-analog synth.
I busted out the MBP with Live 6 and a few of my controllers and gave Paul the run down of Live. Unfortunately it was getting late by then and I had work the next day, so we called it a night. Ah, if only I could just stay at home for a few days, not have think about work and just focus on music for a while…
